Binge and underage drinking have always been an issue on college campuses across the nation, and Central Michigan University is not exempt. Binge drinking can lead to hospitalizations, regrettable decisions, and in some tragic cases even death. In the past few years that I have attended Central, there have been several deaths that I have been aware of due to binge drinking. One student suffocated from holding his head in a trash bag while vomiting, another was so intoxicated that he fell down the stairs and died. These students were young and had bright futures ahead of them, death should not have been part of their college experience. Those students will never walk across the stage with their friends to receive their diploma, all because of binge drinking. Unfortunately, binge drinking is inevitable in college towns, and it seems that it takes occurrences like these ones to make students understand how dangerous it can really be. Why is it that the societal norm in college is to binge drink three or four days a week, even if the student is not of legal age? When did it become this way? It seems that most people do not even want to hang out with one another unless there is alcohol involved. Oh, its your birthday? Lets drink. Got an A on your exam? Drink. Have an exam that you didnt study for and you know you will fail? Drink! Are students using drinking as an excuse to cope with their anxieties and stresses of school? Or because their peers are snapchatting them and encouraging them to shotgun a four loko and then later on posting to their story a video of them vomiting to make other people laugh? It is often seen as cool to be able to drink a lot. You hear kids saying all the time how much alcohol they put down this weekend. Some even make it into games and have events such as beer Olympics or case races where they literally win trophies for being able to drink the most alcohol. While I am sure these activities are fun and a great way to socialize with your friends, at the end of the day they are dangerous. It has been reported from the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that on average two out of five college students have engaged in binge drinking at least twic e during the past two weeks. In addition, the National Insitute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholisms estimate that 4.3% of college students in 2014 consumed five or more drinks in a row on a daily basis (Nicole). I should note that according to the Center for Disease Control binge drinking is defined as a drinking pattern that brings a persons blood alcohol content above .08 grams percent, or 4 to 5 drinks within a two hour time period (CDC). The National Survey on Drug Use and Health had resulted from one of their studies that showed 60.8% of full-time college students aged 18-22 reported alcohol use and 39.1% were classified as binge drinkers. Other studies have reported that the majority of all college drinking reported it attributed to underage students (Nicole). While some students do not drink or drink in moderation, the majority of them go overboard and drink as much as they can. One group of students in particular that are known for binge drinking are those a part of greek life. Some, not all greek affiliated organizations, encourage members and especially new members, to drink in excess. There have been rumors that they even use this as a hazing tactic. People who join Greek Life are there to make friends and impress one another, making it difficult to want to say no even when they know they should. Members would rather drink to impress each other than drink to have a good, safe, time. In addition, they have mixe rs with other fraternities and sororities where they party and drink and of course, have a good time. These mixers and parties in general even outside greek life are a way for new students to make friends. These parties build trust in one another, especially if you see the same people at every party. However, this trust can lead to the inability to protect oneself and the ability to identify risky situations (Nicole). I bring up Greek Life because it is far more common for freshman to join Greek Life and freshman are almost always under the age of twenty-one. Research indicates that there is a significant relationship between greater alcohol use and heavy episodic drinking among those involved socially in college Greek fraternities and sororities (Nicole). It has been found that while those who are underage do not drink as often when they do drink they are more likely to binge drink (NCBI). According to the Center for Disease Control underage binge drinking has caused more than 4,300 deaths per year. In addition, about 189,000 emergency department visits were made last year for injuries and other conditions linked to excessive drinking for people under the age of 21 (CDC). Underage binge drinking is a public health issue and has caused the United States Economy $24 billion in 2010. The Central for Disease Control also states that underage binge drinking can lead to memory problems, abuse of other drugs, and problems with school and social problems. Students tend to forget that the main reason they are away at University is for an education, and binge drinking can often lead to dropping out. Many students skip class due to hangovers or drink instead of studying and doing assignments. Binge drinking not only has substantial effects on ones health but can also have an effect on their future. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimated that 25% of college students have experienced academic difficulties due to alcohol consumption (Nicole). According to an article by Kyle Kaminski on MLive, a Michigan based newspaper, only about 20 percent of the first-time freshman enrolled at CMU earn a four-year degree in four years. While alcohol is not the only blame of this statistic, it certainly plays a large role. If you attend Central Michigan University, it is required that you take an online alcohol course, provided for the student free of cost by the school. However, most students do not take this course seriously because it is online and you can easily click through the slides without retaining any information. This course is also required to only be completed once, during your first semester at CMU. there most likely were students who learned a lot from the course and took it seriously, however for myself and others that I know who have taken the course, they just clicked through the slides. Central could decide to make this course mandatory to take every year in order to make it more effective. If they decide to do so, the course should be different every year, and not so easy to just click through. Instead, they could offer a one day, in-person training session every year so that students will be more likely to pay attention. In addition, I think Central should send out notifications when students have reported serious effects from binge drinking. For example, if a student is hospitalized a report would go out (it would be anonymous) about how much the student drank, their BAC, and if they were injured or not. This could let other students know how serious of a problem this is and hopefully deter them from making the same decisions. What is the proper way to reduce excessive binge drinking among underage college students then? Most college campuses have policies set to deter students from doing so. Central Michigan University, for example, states on their website that those under the age of twenty one cannot possess alcohol in the dorms. Those over the age of twenty one may possess and consume alcohol in the dorms as long as everyone in that room is over the age of twenty-one (Alcohol and Controlled). Furthermore, it is stated that Residents agree not to possess, use, manufacture, produce or distribute, or aid in the use, manufacture, production or distribution of any controlled substance except as expressly permitted by law ( Alcohol and Controlled). The webpage outlines the rules that residents must follow, but it does not explicitly list the outcomes if they violate the rules. This page is mostly geared toward incoming students and underage students, but the most important aspect that could deter students from drinking would be the reprimands that are not easily accessible. While most students would see this and simply follow the rules because it is the right thing to do, others will ignore this page because they will think that there are no consequences. A study was done among 10 universities in North Carolina to solve this issue. The study was around environmental strategies and plans were made with local law enforcement. Across the schools, there was 1 off-campus policy and 11 on campus policy implemented. On campus policies included increased sanctions for student alcogol violations, benefits for students in good standing, new late night programming, ban on alcohol flyers in residence halls, restrictions on alcohol paraphernalia, interdepartmental procedures for better communication and reporting, dual judicial policies to address off-campus behavior and clarity on student code of conduct (Wolfson). Three of the schools implemented comprehensive social norms marketing campaigns including a safe ride program, commitment from area landlords to track student alcohol violations in apartment complexes, and host meetings with area retailers to improve responsible service practices (Wolfson). One school had a Citizen Scholars Program where privileges such as preferential campus housing and parking spots were tied to clean alcohol records (Wolfson). After these measures were implemented students self-reported that there were fewer consequences due to own drinking i.e requiring medical treatment due to drinking, a DUI, being involved in a physical interaction while intoxicated or being taken advantage of sexually (Wolfson). I believe that these measures could significantly help the binge drinking problem at Central Michigan University. People who are familiar with CMU are familiar with the annual event Main Stage. I remember my freshman year at CMU I went and received shot glasses and coupons from local bars, even though I was only eighteen years old. By having bars and liquor stores promote themselves at Main Stage, it gives off the message to young students that CMU condones underage drinking, especially on campus. I believe that Central could benefit significantly if alc ohol paraphernalia, as well as alcohol-related advertisements, were eliminated from the campus. Having meetings with local liquor stores about the importance of IDing properly will also play a huge role in the number of students that underage drink. It is known around campus which liquor stores do not scan IDs, or do not ID at all. If liquor stores had stricter policies, for example, if they scanned a fake ID they would report it to the police, this would deter students from easily accessing alcohol the way they do. Some people think that an easy solution would be to just lower the drinking age to eighteen. This is not an easy or safe solution to the problem. In the 1970s many states lowered the drinking age to eighteen. This was followed by increases in the sale and consumption of alcohol and in alcohol-involved traffic fatalities among those aged 18-20 (Wechsler). After seeing this, states raised their drinking age to twenty-one, causing underage young adults from those states to drive to other states in order to purchase and consume alcohol (Wechsler). In 1984 The National Minimum Drinking Age Act became a law, requiring that states prohibit the purchase and public possession of alcohol for persons aged younger than twenty-one years old, in order to receive all federal high way funds (Wechsler). In other words, Michigan will never lower their drinking age to eighteen because our roads will become almost nonexistent if we lost the little funding we already have to fix them. I propose that Central Michigan University takes after the schools in North Carolina and instills environmental policies to reduce underage binge drinking. Having policies such as calling the police when a fake ID is found alone could dramatically reduce underage drinking. Preventing binge and underage drinking needs to be a goal not just for the campus community, but the community of Mt. Pleasant as well. Every business that sells alcohol needs to have an ID scanner including bars and grocery stores. Alcohol is extremely accessible for underage students, especially when they have made friends that are of age that can buy for them. There needs to be stricter consequences for those who are found supplying alcohol to those who are underage. In addition, rewards such as preferred parking and housing will be a great incentive for students to not get an alcohol violation on or off campus. By having these policies enacted, it could increase freshman enrollment and make residents of campus and Mount Pleasant feel safer. On August 28, 1955, Emmet Til’s body was found lying in the river. Two local men were arrested and charged with murder. This was a significant event during the 50’s because it was very rare that a black man could press charges on a white person. He finally came to the conclusion that if no one else would do it, he would accept the position. While the members of the Montgomery Improvement Association were on a bus ride, shots were fired at them. Martin Luther King, jr. and ED Nixon’s houses were both bombed. The Montgomery Improvement Association also headed the bus boycotts. James Meredith was a young black man that applied to a University in Mississippi. Medgar Evars was the head of the Mississippi State NAACP and counseled James Meredith through this troubling time. After a long fight, the court ruled James Meredith must be accepted. (He was of course qualified. ) On September 20th, Governor Barnett personally flew up to the University of Mississippi and turned James away. On September 25th, James tried to register at the Jackson location and again, Governor Barnett was waiting and also blocked the door entrance so Meredith could not even enter. On Saturday the 29th, Ross Barnett had an engagement to attend to. He was the half time speaker at a football game. On Sunday, September 30th, 100 US marshals were sent to help James Meredith register. President Kennedy was to make a speech in the state of Mississippi also. At 8:00 Mississippi University turned into a battlefield and no one even heard the President’s speech. The mob targeted the media but the marshals were instructed not to use guns. 35 marshals ended up being shot and 2 people were killed. The first peaceful sit-in occurred in Nashville, Tennessee. One day, black students entered the diner and sit at the counter where they were not allowed. They sat there and did homework, talked, and would not leave until they were served. A recollected memory from one of the black women at the sit-in is that of a white waitress who repeatedly kept dropping dishes. She was so frightened that she just dropped one dish after another. Once black students were tired of sitting, others would come in their place. This went on for 3 weeks. 80 demonstrators were arrested and charged with unorderly protest. After this, the blacks decided to not buy from downtown. After 1 month the boycott closed a lot of stores down town. Blacks who worked down town were struck by random acts of violence. A car struck Z. Alexander Lubee’s house. He was a man who defended the protesting students. 147 windows in the medical college across the street were shattered because it was so loud. Freedom rides were bus rides in which interracial passengers sat backwards and drove through the south. For example, the blacks would sit in the front and the whites in the back. They wanted to create a crisis so the government would react and enforce the law. The first freedom ride was on May 1st 1961. 7 whites and 6 blacks were to be the first freedom riders in Washington D. C. The night before the ride they all sat down to have dinner. One freedom rider recalls that it was kind of like â€Å"The Last Supper. † More and more freedom rides continued and on the first occasion, mobs firebombed the bus and blocked the exit. 12 riders were hospitalized and the bus was of course destroyed. Gov. John Patterson of AL said, â€Å"Stay home, fools! † The FBI had information that the busses were going to be attacked but did nothing. Patterson refused to provide protection for these riders. 40 miles away from Montgomery there was no protection for these riders. MLK telephoned Kennedy to tell of the violence. Patterson then said he couldn’t guarantee the safety of MLK Jr. George C. Wallace was the governor of Montgomery Alabama in 1963. He was strict, severe, a segregationist, and a racist. He was closely affiliated with Eugene â€Å"Bull† Connor. â€Å"Bull† Connor was a KKK member and the commissioner of public safety in Alabama at the time. Also, during this time the freedom riders were attacked on Mother’s day. People looked upon it as these students ruined mothers day and disgraced them or some nonsense like that. SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and SCLC (Southern Christ Leadership Council) were two student groups that fought for civil rights. These two organizations at one time spawned a rivalry for one another because SNCC supposedly wanted more attention. During the times of these organizations was a movement called The Albany Movement. In conjunction with the Albany Movement 500 people were jailed. Laurie Pritchett was the chief of police in Albany at that time. He made sure that the jails would not fill up from the mass arrests that were being made. He stuffed 65 people in a cell built to hold only 10. Arrested persons were also sent to jails in other towns to make sure there was enough room for all. In July 1962, MLK Jr. as sentenced to 40 days in jail. He was however, released 3 days later. His bond was paid at Pritchett’s request. The Albany Movement continued on without MLK Jr. for the time being. MKL Jr. was depressed at the fact that Albany was still segregated. Bull Connor also tried to run for mayor in this time but lost. The SCLC organized â€Å"project c† confrontation. The headquarters would be at 16th street Baptist Church. The goal was for demonstrations to target 3 main stores down town. 21 people were arrested the first day in Birmingham. Also, during this time there were 2 mayors and 2 governments in Alabama. One government would just not leave. This was a major cause of the unorderly conduct in Alabama. Connor remained head of police in Birmingham AL. Demonstrations continued and badly affected businesses. Courts finally ordered the demonstrations to stop. MLK Jr. along with SCLC planed the second phase of project C in room 30 at the Gaston Motel. Children led phase 2. They were kept out of school and told to go and protest/demonstrate. Connor brought in police dogs and turned fire hoses on the kids. Finally, the jails filled up and there was an agreed one-day of truce. Friday May 10, 38 days after project C, The Birmingham agreement was made. After this, police still beat blacks and blacks in turn rioted. The March in Washington had 200,000 people show up. It went from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. Some speakers even rewrote their speeches as not to ruin Kennedy’s proposal. MLK Jr. gave his â€Å"Let Freedom Ring† speech and was from this point on seen as the true leader of the movement. On September 15th, the 16th street Baptist Church was bombed and temporarily halted the project. 15 were injured and 4 kids were killed. The freedom summer in Mississippi was a basic invasion. It was designed to â€Å"open up† Mississippi. People risked beatings, arrests, and their lives. William J. Simmons of the White Citizen’s Council wanted to protect the white way of life. The Citizens Council opposed integration. Ross Barnett, a racist, went so far as to foreclose mortgages and punish whites that went against him. He denied loans and passed white-only laws. Blacks outnumbered whites 4-1 in some counties. 1961 was the last of the freedom rides and the end of Freedom Summer. Medgar Evars traveled to Mississippi to help organize the boycott on Capital Street. Hundreds were arrested for marching in the demonstration. After Kennedy’s strongest speech on civil rights in 1963, Medgar Evars was shot in the back in his own driveway after getting out of his car. The wife and kids were inside and as soon as they heard gunshots, hit the floor, as previously rehearsed. His wife came out shortly after to find her husband dead. It was concluded that a member of the White Citizen’s Council shot Medgar Evars. There were 3 men, Goodman, Chaney, and Schreoner, which drove to investigate the burning of a black Methodist Church. At around 3 O’clock their blue Ford station wagon stopped outside Philadelphia by the sheriff, Ceasil Price. They were released at 10pm but that was the last anyone saw of them. They disappeared and Johnson issued a search and FBI involvement. Hoover of the FBI said he wouldn’t protect people and that it was a matter to be dealt with by local authorities. 6 weeks later the bodies were found and Chaney, the only black man in the group, had a fractured skull. Dave Dennis of CORE blames the people who committed this crime just as much as those in Washington for not supporting or enforcing their laws. Everyone knew the men who committed this crime would be found not guilty because they were white. During this time 80 arrests were made and thousands of arrests were made. After this, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act. SNCC opened 41 freedom schools in Mississippi. Whites were now teaching blacks and living in black homes. Civil rights workers invaded the state. As soon as the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed blacks lined up to register to vote. They were told to move to the sidewalk. Less than 1% of blacks were able to register to vote. Sheriff Jim Clark arrested Amelia Bointon, a highly respected community leader during this time. This caused 105 teachers to protest down at the courthouse (Teacher’s March). This occurred in Selma, AL. Clark was confronted in the courthouse about his brutality towards blacks. He said he didn’t know what they were talking about. The Selma to Montgomery march was a response to Jimmy Lee Jackson’s death. A state trooper shot Jimmy because he wanted to protect his mother. Marchers were beaten. One white that marched with the blacks was badly injured. He was told there were no doctors for â€Å"people like him†. SCLC opposed the march but 600 people gathered to march anyway. The marchers crossed over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and there were state troopers waiting for them on the other side. The marchers were ordered by Wallace to stop or brutality and tear gas would be enforced. MLK Jr. asked if they could sit down and pray, which they did. Even though she was timid and didn’t actually breath the law and touch the body or be involved in its transportation. Then the two start to quarrel over Creon believing Haemon is following a women rather than him, when he is really just bringing up logical questions. Haemon is just trying to prove that it wasn’t trying to go against Creon’s law when she took her brother, but was just looking out for him because she loved her brother. 14) He changes it so that the blood of her death cannot be traced back to anyone, when she dies alone in a cave with some food provisions. Also to symbolizes that the dead should not be disturbed to be buried like she attempted to do with her brother, and to prove that she is, â€Å"A lost labour to revere the dead. † 15) We see a sad side of Antigone, were she says it will be her last time seeing light and she never had a wedding or a wedding song. The chorus kind of says, ‘be happy, don’t be sad, you did not go to the grave with a plague, or stabbed with a sword, you’re going to the grave alive! ’ 16) When Creon sees Tiresias, Tiresias asks him if he will follow what he says, Creon says he always does, but Tiresias start to scare Creon when he starts to speak. That adds to the dramatic effect, wanting to know what Tiresias will say. He says that it was right to bury the body and that no one should be punished for it. Also that if she isn’t released there will be more deaths then just Antigone’s. 7) Initially Creon is surprised and does not want to do what Tiresias is suggesting. It follows his character and his not wanted to be wrong and his want for power. Creon learns that the laws of the gods are more important than his own, even though he doesn’t want to accept it. 18) Creon went to check for the voice of his son Haemon in the cave before opening the cave, to release Antigone . Doing so caused the deaths of, Haemon, Polynices, and Antigone. If Creon had saved Antigone first it would have most likely saved Haemon when he saw his betrothed. Doing what Creon did proves how much his pride comes before anyone else. 19) Antigone – Hung herself with linen rope in the grave where she was left to die. Haemon – Stabbed himself through the chest with a sword after seeing Antigone’s dead body and holding her in his arms. Eurydice – Dead at the altar of Creon’s house, slain dead with a sharp edged dagger to her hear with her own hands. Polynices – Found dead at the top of a hill, on the hillside with wild dogs all around him taking their shares. 20) Creon learns that by condemning others he condemned his family and they ll tragically saw their fate because he couldn’t let Antigone burry her brother, that many more people close to Creon died. 21) Antigone is a ‘Tragic Figure’ because she dies in the story and makes the audience feel bad for her because she was punished severely for trying to do right by her brother and bury him.
